Red Astax Granule will not be made up by the mill now. We only have about 100kg in stock but some grades are down to a few kilo's. First come first served.
We are having new granule made up with small differences to this make up. It's basically the same with the same Astaxanthin content but vitamin A & C is less than our current Astax granule.
These will be in the form of 2 types of granule. One similar to the usual red astax granule & the other now combining our popular micro pellet combining the powerful immune stimulant Beta glucans. This is going to be especially useful to Koi & coldwater breeders but is equally something tropical breeders will find very useful.
As with any new project feed it needs to be tried out but I think they will both find favour with breeders.

We had a good source of freeze dried Tubifex but the supplier let us down & we have had to track down another clean supplier. Hopefully this can be on its way by now.

Tropical flake is massively popular. We try to get our foods made up at the last minute to make sure we offer fresh made feeds. Due to some big orders at the tail end of our stock we went out of stock fast which left us on the back foot. New flake is being made up now & will be here next week. We apologise for a small break in supply. Most customers know what we are about & bear with us in these cases but we don't like to run out of anything.

The Amazon trip is something which I have wanted to go on for some time.Alan has been over a few times to blaze the trail but this year will be my first time here. It's a bit of an indoctrination of fire as I will be collecting commercially for export orders with Steve. Looking forward to it immensely - hope I get back alive as some of the areas are very remote.
It's going to be interesting to try out some of our feeds on wild caught fish in the collection facility. We are fish breeders at heart & like to try out feeds for ourselves. We have proved our feeds on wild imports but on the banks of the Amazon is something else.

Freeze dried Blackworm is getting more & more popular. Loads going out in the UK & Scandinavia now. We said this food was going to be dynamite & those trying it are coming back for 200g packs in many cases.
Our Aussie supplier is helping us out in promotion & we were able to drop original prices by 10%. We always try to help breeders out.

We have been sourcing some products from Brine Shrimp Direct in the USA for some years. We now import many shipments from this company on a regular scale & they recently made us UK agents for their products. We didn't ask for this but we appreciate help from our suppliers who recognise how our business is expanding.
The products from this company are excellant & we started out using them in our breeding shed before we started pushing them online.

Spirulina flake - we had a fantastic batch last time. The manufacturer is finally lisening to what we want for our UK customers - big flakes, not too brittle & a load darker which means lots more Spirulina. The make up of our previous flake was good but this is way above that.
We realise many livebearers only require 8% Spirulina in their feed but nobody has put veggie cats under this criteria we are aware of. Between wood & natural Spirulina we consider this an excellant feed.

If it's not too late we hope all our breeders/customers do well this year.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-83325597693640282682011-11-14T15:28:00.001-08:002011-11-14T15:37:01.918-08:00NLS DisruptionsDue to the new labelling laws in the EC imports of NLS (Spectrum) feeds have been delayed. Whilst we carry a fair stock of most of the range we are suffering with the popular 600g Cichlid Formula tubs. The 300g size will be out of stock shortly. We ask our customers to try other Cichlid feeds in the NLS range such as Medium Fish formula (2mm) or the Thera range which we carry in stock including the 600g size tubs.
A new import will shortly be in the UK so this is a temporary glitch. Our apologies for this. The EC seem to want to make things as difficult as they can for businesses with constant meddling in animal feeds.
Don't forget the charity auction is getting near - 4th December 2011 in Redditch.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-56199368308926696942011-11-05T10:55:00.000-07:002011-11-05T11:15:37.181-07:00New Cichlid Flake
This week we had a new flake called 'Cichlid Flake'. This is made up from Krill, Mysis shrimp & Artemia etc. A flake which is very useful to any omnivorous fish. All the ingredients are made up fresh in the USA so no harmful additions are in the mix.
As you can see from the photo flakes made up in the US are generally quite thick. We specialise in these type of flakes. The range now is quite extensive & compliments the sticks & wafers we have also expanded on over the past months.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-46205142895957385122011-11-05T10:41:00.000-07:002011-11-05T10:55:14.363-07:00New Labelling LegislationThe EC have once again helped us out (?) with a change in how labels on pet feeds should appear.
Over the industry millions of labels are having to be dumped with basically a few word changes -
'Ingredients' should now be replaced with 'composition'
'Analysis' or 'typical analysis' should now be replaced with 'Analytical Constituents'
'Ash' should now be replaced with 'crude ash' .
WHY ? What benefits can this have for all the money we pour into the EC.
We obviously have to comply with this but they do give a window to get things sorted out.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-89812094487315487192011-10-29T06:48:00.000-07:002011-10-29T07:02:53.700-07:00New Foods & Update
Spirulina is something we sell a lot of particularly in flakes so we thought about mixing this with garlic flakes particularly for Rift Lake cichlids & this has been doing well. Also, we have a new Pacific Krill which a lot more orange. This one is nice & soft & lends itself to be crushed up for young fish. Or feed it whole to larger fish.
We have had samples of a soft Krill pellet which looks nice. Hopefully we should have these in on the next shipment.
We are keen to source our feeds away from China as we have heard reports of chemical additives being put in some feeds. The above new foods are all sourced from the USA where they are grown & processed. Obviously buying like this is more expensive but we try to get the best quality of foods worldwide.
If you want to buy cheap foods try e-Bay. We are amazed so many people list cheap bags of food. I hear the net is closing on those trading without a business name & tax accounts. This has got to be good news as who knows how old the foods are. We trade legally & are VAT registered as well. If we have to pay taxes why not some of these sellers?
I also saw someone splitting buckets of Tetra Prima. Tetra take a dim view of this & have prosecuted in some cases. We do not split any named brand foods. All our flakes are specially made up & we have the rights to trade these under our brand name.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-37826133845499141612011-05-14T15:06:00.000-07:002011-05-14T15:52:25.830-07:00Update - May 2011With so much going on the blog seems to take a back seat.
Since the last post we have continued to keep plodding along. We have not put coldwater feeds onto the site before but this year we found some great product & decided to offer it. New feeds always take a while to get off the ground so this is work in progress.
Postage is a real headache to get right on the site. As an average it works out about right but some orders are sent out over postal cost & some under. Generally we put in extra feed weight where a customer pays over the odds.
The new increase in postage costs is quite large but we decided not to put costs up this time round.
It seems everything is going up with banks & the government charging 3 times for the same thing. This mentality has filtered down to Parcelforce in the UK where imports are having extra charges put on for 'handling fees' which impact on the cost of imports outside the EC.
We have been lucky in getting small import duty amounts but now are seeing amounts of 10% leveed against imports from the USA. Of course this has to impact on the cost of goods we bring in & some items we are having to seriously look at. We hate having to increase prices but in some cases we are close to making no profit which is not good in any business.
Freight costs, taxes, duties & hidden costs are stacking up to make imports outside the EC very expensive.
Our customers expect top quality feeds from us. Businesses these days are up against more & more charges in importing & it really is a fight to keep prices down.
Dainichi are still not able to send to the EC. This has been going on for over a year now. In the same vein the US are now saying Artemia is not fit to feed to fish be it for food or ornamental. This is something brewing in the US & lawyers are probably going to come out of it smelling of roses. How aquaculture businesses are going to survive in all this remains to be seen.
Is the world going crazy with beaurocracy & red tape. When will common sense prevail?timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-8142514309905974942011-02-05T07:28:00.000-08:002011-02-05T07:54:08.295-08:00New feed Import InWe are always on the look out for new feeds & this month we invested in a small shipment from another source. I was very impressed in the quality of these samples & lost no time in getting them on the site. We hope to bring in more flake types from this source shortly.
We now have a really nice selection of flakes. We have only blended the green & black flakes so far & these sell as fast as I can package them.
If you want a special blend we can easily make it up for you - just drop me an e-mail. Postage is a little more than UK rates which the shopping cart adds to each order. In the past we asked customers from these countries to contact us for a postal amount. This was a hassle for our customers & caused us more time to work things out individually.

From now on all customers from European countries (classed as Europe by Royal Mail) can use the shopping cart buttons without contacting us. We are sure this will be better for our customers in Europe & hopefully attract more business.
The only restriction to this is the weight of the packet which must be a maximum of 2kg. This is because Air Mail postal rates rise dramatically over this.
The Babelfish online translator is very good. This is built into the site. If you want to see what the site looks like in Chinese or Russian have a play around with it.
Dainichi update - We have been exchanging e-mails & the USDA which approve goods for export to the EU are still dragging their feet with the permit. This time it's the krill ingredient. What is really crazy is the USDA have approved the source as fit for use.
The whole EC situation on fish feeds imported into the EC is getting a little crazy & this beaurocracy is going to get worse with new changes coming into force this April.
Dainichi are doing everything they can to renew their permit.
Meanwhile stocks of Cichlid foods are getting extremely low & most are now out. If you need these foods I would advise buying them up now.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-78805728063318381392011-01-08T07:15:00.000-08:002011-01-08T07:38:02.944-08:00New Year Catch upIt's been a few weeks since the last blog. Christmas & New Year have come & gone. Happy New Year to all our customers. We really appreciate your e-mails & orders.
Last year we had a fairly quiet Christmas period due to the recession but this year has been non stop with orders every day except Christmas day. We thank you all for supporting us.
As we are VAT registered we have had to put prices up by the 2.5% increase. The radio has been saying many retailers are going to use this to increase prices further. At TA we have only increased our prices by the 2.5% VAT increase & have not 'sneaked' in subtle increases here & there.
For a 100g bag of our granule this is only 8p extra & 77p on a big pouch of Siberian Brine Shrimp eggs so it's not so bad really.
Sales after the rise have increased if anything especially to mainland EC destinations.
The charity auction has been booked for June 5th 2011 at the same venue. We had to cancel the December do due to the cold weather. Some photos are on the auction page. As always click the yellow box top left of the home page to get into the auction page.
This year the BKA & BCA are holding auctions at the venue. In all we hope to host at least 5 auctions this year.
New products had to be put on the backburner this month after David & Nick sent me a nice letter asking for a donation to HM Revenue & Customs. I really appreciated it dropping through the letter box on Christmas Eve but that's the way it goes.
New products & new packaging are planned for February. As always we are continually looking to try new things out.
With more trade orders coming in from the EC we are keen to get all our products in retailer packaging this year. This will take some investment but should be completed this Spring.
Once again - thank you all for your interest in TA products. We look forward to supplying fresh feeds for your fish in 2011.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-14410655058043223162010-11-20T05:31:00.000-08:002010-11-20T05:49:48.303-08:00New Products InAt last the new granules are in & starting to go out. Last time we were getting problems with the site crashing. Since then we have improved our bandwidth & transferred one of my bigger sites on Killifish to an American server which releases a big amount of space. Hopefully crashes will be a thing of the past.
Loads of new imports continue to come in. New lines have been added to the site including the new wafers as Spirulina & a fish/beefheart blend. These are made up by a small operator & not a mass produced item.
Also new is the Cichlid floating mini sticks. We have been missing a good quality floating stick. They should also prove very useful to our fancy goldfish customers.

We continue to search for new products & one of our suppliers who makes the very popular Astax crumb now informs us they can make up for us a Spirulina crumb. The specs look really good on this & we can't wait to get some in. As with the Red Astax we will have various sized granules to add to our list.
Also available will be a specialised Cichlid granule & a Discus granule.
Hopefully all these will be in stock in a couple of weeks.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-1558118162556812382010-10-01T13:54:00.000-07:002010-10-01T14:22:03.389-07:00Site DownThe website crashed for 4 days last weekend. We have 3 sites on the server & despite increasing to maximum allowable bandwidth to prevent this we went over & the sites crashed.
We have reluctantly decided to take the Killifish site offline to make more bandwidth available for the TA site. This should stop this happening in the future.
We apologise for inconvenience during the site being offline.
The Killifish site will be back in the near future as we are looking at hosting on another server to keep it seperate.

Spirulina Flake - We have negotiated our Spirulina flake to be made in larger flake sizes. Some customers have asked if this is possible. The flake will now be taken off the machine without reducing to usual flake size. This is easily reduced to flake sizes you prefer.
We really sell a lot of this flake & it's always produced freshly on our order & not taken from stock.

Stick Feeds - The biggest shipment of sticks we have ever brought in is on the way over. We had to increase order weight as it is proving extremely popular now with 50% of the earthworm stick already sold from this shipment.
As you may be aware we get these made up from a single source who produces small quantities. The machine producing these sticks recently broke down & a brand new machine had to be bought. This has not been cheap & consequently the cost to us has risen slightly. We did not put the price up on the last rise to us but this time had to increase slightly.
New floating sticks of Spirulina & another of Beef Heart is currently coming in which fills a gap in our stick feeds.
Wafers - New wafers of Spirulina & another of Beef Heart are on the way over also. Our customers asked us to source a good supply which we have done.

The driving agency part of the business has been extremely busy lately. Postage has been a problem but I now have someone to post daily so this sorts out a big headache.
This side of the business provides a lot of income for the fish side. We are currently working on a long overdue repackaging of our granule, brine shrimp, stick etc range in foil pouches. These will be designed to look good on retailers shelves.
More flakes will be packed in our tubs too.
The black flake is due to come in again soon. This has proved a great food for livebearers & guppies in particular.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-64501828072741833572010-09-06T16:22:00.000-07:002010-09-06T16:51:09.793-07:00Holiday
Every year I say I will never shut down for a full week again & go off with the bucket & spade to Malta & every year I still do it. Coming back is always the same thing with loads of orders & correspondance to clear. This year was extremely busy & it took 2 days to clear all orders. As always all orders were in the post as fast as possible & this year all were away on Monday.
Orders on Monday were also heavy but will be in the post on Tuesday morning.
We try to work a 'just in time' policy of bringing in small quantities freshly made food & now many feeds are needing to be made up with our suppliers. A lot of food from all over the world will be coming in shortly.
The BCA will be holding a meeting & auction in Redditch (same venue as our charity auctions) on 26th September & we will have a stand there on the day to show our products off.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-48064118360066315162010-07-16T16:06:00.000-07:002010-07-16T16:18:22.848-07:00Indian Almond LeavesIt's amazing how many problems crop up with suppliers. We sell a lot of Indian Almond leaves. Some customers buy them 100-500 at a time. We keep a decent stock but were caught out recently by a series of big orders & had to order more.
Problem was - the monsoon period had just started. This is an extract from the supplier which brings home the problems experienced in getting these leaves at this time of year -

'We are really sorry for the delay..but we have had several really bad tropical storms hit our village ( start of the rainy season )...2 times we have been totally washed out...both times the heavy winds blew the covers off the leaves which we had on them to protect them from the wind and rain while we where drying them...each time the leaves where either blown away or where totally waterlogged that we had to bin them...we have been busy re-pressing and drying more and are just waiting for them to dry so we can brush them before shipping'..

Our policy is not to store big quantities of anything in favour of keeping stock fresh so some times of the year we at the mercy of mother nature.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-75693260806697523992010-06-26T07:55:00.000-07:002010-06-26T08:33:15.972-07:00Updates
The charity auction always takes up a lot of time before & after the event but it's always worth it when you see how much money was raised for our 3 main charities. If you haven't seen the results page yet please click the link in the yellow box top right corner of the home page.
I'm amazed how big this event is becoming. It attracts lots of the UK's finest breeders & I think is a fantastic day out & a chance to meet fellow fishkeepers & expert breeders alike.

Decapsulated Brine Shrimp now back in stock. This took a little time to get in due to processing at the facility. It's always hit & miss with this item which can come in with shell & rubbish. Thankfully after many years of working with this we have found some good people to deal with & this batch is very clean & shell free.
We have moved over 40 kg this week alone so it must be good to get these kind of repeat orders.

New Life Spectrum - At last the new range is in stock & cart buttons are now on the site. It's a really big range of products now but we are filling up with the range again so things will soon be back to the way it was before they moved premises.

Getting more work on the haulage side of the business which does cause a slight delay in posting in some cases due to early morning starts. Most orders are being sent by last post or next day.
This work brings in extra finance so we can bring in these expensive overseas imports & find new products for our customers.

Orders have been rising & new customers including Universities & professonal breeders have been placing orders.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-91590494016821701642010-05-29T14:39:00.000-07:002010-05-29T15:04:29.938-07:00Charity AuctionFor 10 years now I have been involved in the Midland Charity Auction. To start with we didn't want to make it a commercial thing where someone made a profit from it. It's grown from making a few quid to generating hundreds of pounds each auction. Now we can say we have generated a few thousand pounds for various charities.
I don't think any other fish auction does this. It takes an army of people to help put these events on & I hope I can name them in the post auction report.
Conservation has always been close to my heart in fishkeeping. This year one of the old guard is packing up due to the inevitable advancing years & health issues. It's a sad fact that these people with a huge amount of experience need to pass things on to a younger set of enthusiasts but maybe they are not coming forward..
I know & fear that many of these collections will now die out in years to come.
With so many new collections now coming in conservation becomes very hard.

It is of course impossible to conserve everything in captivity. Let's hope we can leave nature to look after its own & not let our greed for land or resourse domination take over.....timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-77122220747386879412010-05-20T14:45:00.000-07:002010-05-20T14:58:57.217-07:00HolidayBack from holiday to a load of orders & e-mail work but all have been posted & replied to on the first day back. Initially we only ordered the Cichlid Formula & the new Thera A 2mm granule. This has been due to the high demand for these items & our wish to get in a large stock to keep customers from waiting for new shipments.
We have been sending out buckets of 2.2kg Cichlid Formula virtually daily. The new 600g tubs believe it or not are almost sold out & a new order had to be placed. Last year it was the 300g tubs which were selling out - now customers want the larger tubs. It's a true measure of how good the food is.

As many of you know the business is split between mail order fish foods & my one man HGV driving agency. This has become very busy in itself & I have found myself working from 4am to midnight some days to keep up with all the work. In some cases I have not been home in time to get orders in the post & they have been delayed 24 hours longer than normal. For this I apologise but under the circumstances we are coping very well.
The money generated from this driving agency side is being ploughed back into getting bigger stocks in where things like sticks regularly go out of stock. Also expanding into new foods we have wanted to include on the site becomes a lot nearer happening.
Sales of brine shrimp eggs continue to grow. In one week we sold 185 x 550g pouches. A lot of farms now buy from us.

Our Midland charity auction is fast approaching for June 6th. Please see the site for regular updates. The photo was taken today. Swans & Coots are nesting on the pool.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-67356077817393047912010-04-14T10:57:00.000-07:002010-04-14T11:04:33.431-07:00Spectrum Finally Now In !!!Yes, it's true - Spectrum have docked today & should be here on Friday. Judging by the amount of e-mails we have had asking about the next shipment arrival date it looks like we will be kept busy mailing out.
Several cases are already ordered from other EC countries.
We should have them ready for the BCA convention on the 18th April along with a decent stock of Dainichi. Looking forward to the lectures. Some good speakers on this year.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-48751804306129764082010-04-13T13:58:00.000-07:002010-04-13T14:21:13.174-07:00Photographs - DainichiI have been struggling along with a couple of cheap compact digital cameras to take photos of the products on the site. In one week both cameras gave up the ghost leaving a hole in putting good photos on the site. I decided to save up & get a decent digital SLR & finally bought a Canon 550D which is a superb piece of kit.
It takes really nice movie quality & I'm looking at doing something in this direction in the future.

I have been having problems with the disc drive & it finally packed up just as I was going to load the Canon software. Tomorrow will see the computer in bits & a new drive installed (hopefully).
Then I can get to grips with all the temporary photos on the site & some new photos of the new flake food tubs which look great.

Dainichi are again having some problems with beaurocracy. This ridiculous legislation dreamed up in Brussels is having a big effect on Dainichi & NLS. The US authorities are behind in renewing export licenses to the EC & consequently Dainichi (from 9th April) have not been able to renew their license. They have applied in good time but the authorities have not even started the ball rolling in the renewal process.
I personally thought we in the UK were contributing over £170 Billion pounds a year to the EC to make life easier but I must have missed something here.
This means I cannot get shipments in & will have to make do with the stock I have.
I have a decent stock available at the moment but some grades & pack sizes are now out of stock. I expect the British Cichlid Association auction this weekend to bring stocking levels down.timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421962168982881067.post-55276804272411592102010-03-21T12:26:00.000-07:002010-03-21T12:42:38.641-07:00Some New ProductsSales of our stick foods have been steadily increasing. These are not cheap but we buy in from what we consider the best manufacturer in the world for these products & quality always demands a higher price.
It's true other online sellers offer cheaper sticks but generally these are sold for angling purposes & not in the same ball park regarding quality.
We are the only UK customer for this companies product.

We will be bringing in more varieties of sticks from this manufacturer which contain Garlic to prevent fungal & bacterial infections in the gut & Paprika which is a well known attractant to fish.
These new sticks will be -

Spirulina - Garlic/Paprika
Colour - Garlic/Paprika
Cichlid - Garlic/Paprika
Vitamin - Garlic/Paprika

It usually takes 3 weeks to make these up & ship to us. As always these are freshly made up. We order small regular quantities rather than a bulk lot which is sitting on the shelf for months.

timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05589470820395694772noreply@blogger.com0
